Narrative Assessment - Literacy - 29 Oct 2015

Learner: Darren      Learning Coach: Miriam Kamsteeg             Date: 29 Oct 2015
Learning Area: Literacy - Reading Assessment
Learning Observed
Today Darren completed a Reading Assessment with me. He read a higher Blue level book called “Clever Little Dinosaur”. Darren read with 89% accuracy. This means he still needs to work at the same Yellow level for a bit longer to consolidate his word accuracy at this level. He was, however able to retell the story very well and answered most comprehension questions correctly.
Evidence of learning
IMG_1017.JPG
Darren read and retold the story. I wonder if he is doing this at home each night?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Darren is developing his Capabilities in Reading. He is Reading many words with accuracy (Using Language, Symbols and Texts). Darren is making sense of what he reads (Thinking).
Next Learning Steps

iExplore Group Narrative

Learner: Taj, Owen, Darren and Lucy                     Learning Coach: Mr Hattie          Date: 21 October 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat Two - iExplore
Learning Observed
For our iExplore we are looking at gardening. We have been preparing the garden beds so that we can start using them. For this we had to pull out all of the weeds. We used this to explain what a weed does and how it effects a garden. The learners had to use shovels and gardening gloves to pull out all of the weeds. At one point Owen and Taj were working together to get a big group of weeds out. Taj had the shovel and Owen was pulling on the weed. This was great to see and they had discussed how they were going to get this difficult weed out. Taj and Owen showed great resilience and problem solving when they worked together to get out a weed. Taj had the shovel and Owen pulled on the weed. This was exciting to hear how they were going to solve their problem. Lucy and Darren had seen the boys sorting out their problem and saw that they could use the same strategy to solve their problem. This was a great connection.
Evidence of learning
Taj and Owen problem solving
Lucy and Darren making connections
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The Key Competencies that were being used in this iExplore was “participating and contributing” as the learners had to work together to pull out the weeds. “Managing self” as we had times where the learning coach was busy helping others so the learners had to sort out any issues that arose. The vision principles that were being used was “collaboration” as the learners had to work together.
Next Learning Steps
The learners next steps are:
  • learning how and why we turn over the soil to prepare the garden for planting.
  • to plant some seeds in the garden and take care of them.

Narrative Assessment - 4 August 2015 - Literacy

Learner:  Darren       Learning Coach: Miriam Kamsteeg             Date: 4 August 2015
Learning Area: Literacy - Reading
Learning Observed
Today Darren read “The Dance” with me. He is pointing to the words and reading with fluency. Darren was able to read the basic sight words with ease. When he got to a “tricky” word he needed prompting to sound it out.
Evidence of learning

Darren read this book with fluency. I wonder if he is able to read without pointing to the words?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Darren is developing his Capabilities in Reading. He was able to choose a book and begin reading without prompting (Managing Self). Darren is using the pictures to help decode words (Thinking). He is reading many basic sight words (Using Language, Symbols and Texts).
Next Learning Steps
  • Make sure Darren is choosing the slightly harder Red 2 and Red 3 books
  • Explicit teaching on the “h” digraphs. e.g. sh, ch, th etc
  • Share learning with home.

Collaboration Tower Narrative Assessment

Learner: Darren                     Learning Coach:  Mr Hattie               Date: 28 July 2015
Learning Area: Developmental Collaboration
Learning Observed
This term at Ormiston Primary we are promoting Collaboration. We have been teaching the skills required to collaborate effectively. Today I was called over to see a group’s creation. To my surprise they had made a Tower the size of them. It had a repeating pattern the whole way up and was built collaboratively. Darren explained to me how they had made a tower and what it is going to be used for. He had created an imaginary use for the tower and who was working in the tower.  The language that had come out of the description of tower was very impressive The skills that were required for this project were teamwork, communication of who does what, discussion of the ongoing pattern and respect. It was impressive to see how they had come up with this tower. A totally self motivated project. Well done Darren!
Evidence of learning
IMG_0938.jpg
The Groups end product. Very impressive.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The Key Competencies used for this project are “thinking” as the group had to think about what they were going to make with the materials that they had. Also Collaboration was used with this project. The learners had delegated jobs and what they were responsible for and there was discussion during this time. “Relating to others” was being used as they had to show respect for others and their ideas to achieve their task.
Next Learning Steps
Darren’s next learning steps are:
  • more complex description of his project.
  • writing about his project and how he created it.

Narrative Assessment - Numeracy

Learner: Darren                     Learning Coach: Mr Hattie                 Date: 2 July 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
During our lesson Darren was learning how to instantly recall basic facts to 20. This is a skill that he has a lot of good strategies for, but it has not been cemented in. The aim is for these problems to knowledge and not having to think about how to solve them. Darren has been getting pretty good at solving them quickly. For practice Darren has been playing “Dice Wars”. This game needs two dice and the way you play is by rolling both dice and as quickly as you can add them together. An extension from this is subtraction them. This game has really improved the speed that Darren is answering them.
Evidence of learning
IMG_0859.jpg
It’s now Darren’s turn to roll the dice.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During this game the Key Competency “thinking” is being used as they had to think about what the problem is that they are working out. “Managing self” is being used as this is an independent task. This game is a game where you have to collaborate with others, so “Relating to others” is being shown.
Next Learning Steps
Darren’s Next Learning Steps are:
  • instantly recognising patterns to 100 e.g. 60 + 40 or 70 - 20
  • instantly recognising halves to 20.

Darren's Video on Wednesday, 24 June 2015

Narrative Assessment - Literacy: Writing Term 2

Learner: Darren                     Learning Coach: Abby Morgan              Date: 22 June 2015
Learning Area:  Literacy - Writing
Learning Observed
As part of our writing programme we have been exploring different forms of writing. This week we viewed a video of a baby bird hatching and had to describe what happened. We brainstormed ideas before watching and wrote down all the words that we thought would be useful for our writing. After watching the video we added new words to the list and then shared ideas. Darren was excited and engaged as he watched the video and was able to tell me about what had happened. Darren was able to write a sentence describing what happened in the video and used three of the words we had brainstormed. He was able to locate the words in the list and correctly spell these in his writing. Darren is making progress with his writing and is attempting more words and is able to identify the main sounds in these.
Evidence of learning
Two examples of Darren’s writing. I wonder if he enjoys writing at home?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Darren has displayed the Vision Principle of capable as he develops new learning skills and behaviours. He is also demonstrating his ability to use the key competency of using language, symbols and text as he shares his ideas and thoughts through written language. Darren applies his existing knowledge with new learning which demonstrates his ability to use the Key Competency of thinking.
Next Learning Steps
  • Assist in learning to correctly use full stops and capital letters
  • Introduce Darren to the high frequency word games and activities
  • Publish his favourite stories on his Blog to share with home

We Built this City!

Learner:  Darren       Learning Coach: Luisa Maloni    Date: 23rd  April, 2015
Learning Area: iExplore: We Built This City
Learning Observed
Due to the high interest in building structures out of the magnetic shapes, we have embarked upon an iExplore learning adventure designing and constructing a city out of cardboard. Before school had started, Nanami, Darren and Simeon got to work, trying out their ideas for this cardboard city. They each took an active role in constructing their building. Darren was able to point out parts of the building and say what they were for. Darren was able to draw a number of designs for his building and use some appropriate topic vocabulary to discuss his design e.g. cylinder.
Evidence of learning
IMG_0639.JPG

Darren is able to work with others to try out ideas for his building.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Darren shows that he can work Collaboratively with others toward a common goal (Participating and Contributing). He uses his creativity and Thinking skills to trial his ideas with the materials he has available and to describe the purpose of his building.
Next Learning Steps

  • Develop his ideas about the purpose of structures as he designs and constructs other structures. Can he describe his building using new or appropriate topic vocabulary? E.g. factory, apartment, skyscraper, offices etc...Can he show how his design includes modifications to suit the purpose of his building? E.g. one large space and a kitchen/storage area for a restaurant
  • Make sure everyone is in agreement with ideas and decisions made about a project

How Much does it Cost?

Learner:  Darren              Learning Coach: Luisa Maloni  Date: 17th February, 2015
Learning Area: iExplore: Baking Project
Learning Observed
After making countless play dough biscuits, a group of learners wanted to bake some biscuits for an iExplore project. As we planned for our baking project, we realised we needed to know how much it was all going to cost to buy the ingredients. A group of learners including Darren went on a supermarket website to research prices for each ingredient and record these on a ‘costing’ sheet. I observed that Darren really enjoyed this process and was able to support others in how to write the dollar symbol and to include the ‘dot’ or decimal point. I observed that he was very focussed and enthusiastic about this task and at times was able to wait for his turn to find and write the prices. Working together, this group was able to complete the task with little need for support from me!
Evidence of learning
IMG_0092.JPG

These learners are finding prices for our ingredients from a supermarket website. I wonder if they help with the shopping at home? You can see the final costing in our proposal video to mr McNeil.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Darren is demonstrating his Capabilities in writing numbers and searching for items on a website (Using Language, Symbols and Text). His Collaborative skills are also showcased in his abilities to take turns and share his own expertise and enthusiasm with others in the group (Relating to Others/Participating and Contributing).
Next Learning Steps

  • Develop collaboration skills by continued experiences in small group -task based activities that require an outcome
  • Extend understandings around money and the decimal point through an introduction to our ‘play money’

iExplore: Experiments with colour!

Learner:  Darren  Dai  Learning Coach: Luisa Maloni            Date: 5th March, 2015
Learning Area: iExplore: Experiments with Colour
Learning Observed

Darren has been involved in a range of experiments this week as we explore colour and paint. Today Darren was trying out a range of painting tools to make marks with. He experimented with sponges, skewers and even a bath loofah! Darrens work shows he has thought about pattern and composition as well as how he can manipulate each tool in an effective way. Darren has been learning about making comments and asking questions. When asked about his artwork/study he said: “I liked making the circles and squares with the sponges.” “I wonder why it has sprinkles and stuff inside?”
Evidence of learning

2015-03-05 09.27.35.jpg
IMG_0335.jpg

Darren’s artwork shows he has an understanding or appreciation for shape, pattern and symmetry.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Darren is demonstrating the Ormiston Primary Vision Principle of Curiosity and Key Competency: Thinking, as he explores the different marks he can make with different tools. His comments show he is developing capabilities in talking about what he is doing. In the McCarthy and Kirk Assessment of Oral Language he scored 3 years 3 months. He is learning how to make comments and ask questions.
Next Learning Steps

  • Extend his thinking by asking what other tools he could use to paint with? Could he create his own tool to use?
  • Continue to make comments and begin to ask questions about his own and others’ artwork or experiments
