Narrative Assessment - Numeracy

Learner: Darren                     Learning Coach: Mr Hattie                 Date: 2 July 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
During our lesson Darren was learning how to instantly recall basic facts to 20. This is a skill that he has a lot of good strategies for, but it has not been cemented in. The aim is for these problems to knowledge and not having to think about how to solve them. Darren has been getting pretty good at solving them quickly. For practice Darren has been playing “Dice Wars”. This game needs two dice and the way you play is by rolling both dice and as quickly as you can add them together. An extension from this is subtraction them. This game has really improved the speed that Darren is answering them.

It’s now Darren’s turn to roll the dice.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During this game the Key Competency “thinking” is being used as they had to think about what the problem is that they are working out. “Managing self” is being used as this is an independent task. This game is a game where you have to collaborate with others, so “Relating to others” is being shown.
Next Learning Steps
Darren’s Next Learning Steps are:
  • instantly recognising patterns to 100 e.g. 60 + 40 or 70 - 20
  • instantly recognising halves to 20.
